November 2009

| Last week’s Bioprocess UK brought together over 200 of the UK’s senior managers and technology experts to
focus on the UK bioprocessing sector and its critical role in driving UK competitiveness through innovation.
York racecourse proved to be an excellent setting for the meeting that gave a relaxed atmosphere to the event.

It was the first time that Biopharma attended the event and Peter Williams, Sales Director for BPS was keen
to find out more. “I was very impressed by the calibre of the delegates, and it proved to be an excellent opportunity to
catch up with old faces and also meet new people.
“Of particular interest was an excellent session on the challenges and opportunities associated with manufacturing
advanced therapies. Regenerative medicine is seen as a strategic area for growing the UK bioprocessing industry.
This is an area that demands high value manufacturing approaches and it is one where the UK’s high quality
bioprocess skills are globally competitive.
“ We are already playing a role in this emerging sector. Biopharma Technology, our contract research organisation,
is already working with many leading UK organisations. Some current projects include new approaches to processing
bioactive scaffolds and developing processes for freeze drying of mammalian cells.
“I was encouraged to see that our sector remains solid. Biologics are the fastest growing class of new medicines
and the industry needs to continue innovation and investment.
“I also wanted to take the opportunity to congratulate Dr Steve Taylor, Business Director of Avecia Biologics,
on his receiving the inaugural The Peter Dunnill Award for Outstanding Contribution to UK Bioprocessing’.
It is very well deserved and a fitting way to Professor Peter Dunnill, who did so much to establishing UCL
as a global leader in biochemical engineering and sadly died this year.”
